Report

DUSCC’s defeat by 5 wickets at Strathmore was an honourable one given the strength of the team put out by the opposition. After an astute decision by Alan Bell that we should bat first, a slow opening saw just 24 scored off the first 7 overs of accurate bowling. However Steve Boarder (25) and Duncan Heather (an excellent 33) raised a 50 partnership by the 11th over and were accelerating smoothly when Steve was dismissed and three more wickets followed for just 4 runs scored. Scott’s customary late hitting saw him to 21 and the total to 103.

The start to the Strathmore innings made us realise pretty sharp-ish that this was not enough, on what was a decent batting track. Their opener (a firsts player – albeit an opening bowler not batsman) biffed 42 in ultra-quick time, but no sooner had he announced his intention to retire at the end of the over when Alan MacDonald took a brilliant catch to dismiss him properly. It was over as a contest by then, but our persistence and effort in the field, along with our determination to enjoy it despite the imbalance between the two teams, were very impressive.
