Report
St Andrews regained the Ferrier Cup for 2010 with a convincing 4 wicket win over DUSCC, reaching their target of 156 with 13 balls of the 25 overs to spare. Having won the toss and batted first, DUSCC’s innings relied on fine contributions from the middle order of Dennis Petrie (28), Ian Robson (33), Miles Dixon (35) and Varun Gopalakrishnan (who stood 35 not out when we lost our last wicket to the last ball of the innings). While all these knocks were praiseworthy, it was particularly good to see Ian, on debut, show a few glimpses of the class which earned him some Minor Counties games a few years back. Hopefully he hasn’t been put off by aggravating a groin injury, or by the decision to fire him out leg-before (some language best described as ‘colourful’ was aimed Blair’s way on his return to the boundary as a result) and he will be able to turn out for DUSCC again. Goodness knows we could do with some more talent…
After the first 2 overs, sent down by Dennis and Miles, had conceded only 1 run, St Andrews got away from us and quickly made us suspect 155 wasn’t going to be enough, on what was a good batting wicket with short boundaries. Our bowling was not nearly consistent enough to create any pressure, and St Andrews to their credit have a very impressive batting line-up. We did not take the first wicket before 63 had been scored, and that was a run out; at one point they were on 145-2 with plenty of time to score the remainder. Through some curious running we took some late wickets through run-outs and gave some respectability to the final result – a loss by 4 wickets – but in truth we came a distant second in this one. Congratulations to St Andrews on their regaining of the Cup.
