The DUSCC 2011 season got off to a successful start, as we went 1-0 up in the ‘best of 7’ series against our friends at Almond Valley. (Unbeknownst to me, before this game, was the recent creation of a most handsome trophy for the winners of this annual series. It’s a table leg with a cricket ball stuck on the top. It’s called… the Table Leg Trophy…) For the first game of the season, played in chilly conditions, the team’s overall performance was exceptional – catching and outfielding uniformly good, bowling straight; it was the batting however which brought about some of the most noteworthy contributions. Richard Adelman, on debut, scored an unbeaten 50 which oozed quality; Colin Reid showed excellent early-season form with a rapid 30; and the late-innings hitting of Miles Dixon (27*) made teammates very glad they didn’t have to try and get their hands in the way.
After Miles had made early inroads with the ball, Duncan Heather made amends for his duck with three quick wickets, including a mad-eyed ‘I’m having this one’ catch off his own bowling, and Richard A continued to show what a fantastic acquisition he could be with a ‘shelling peas’ catch at slip. After this we were able to allow others to turn their arms over and still restrict Valley to 101 in reply to our 151.
