Report

DUSCC took a 2-0 lead in the Tayside Table Leg series with this narrow 5 run win over Almond Valley, in one of the best and most exciting games we’ve had in a long while, and played – as is customary with the Valley – in the greatest of spirit. Alan Bell – as also seems customary this year – won the toss and decided to bat first. An opening partnership of 51 between Richard Adelman (43 – which almost constitutes a failure for him, such has been his tremendous start to the DUSCC cause: mind you, he does now possess an average, currently standing at 148) and Steve Boarder (27 – double figures!!) was racked up in 12 overs, and the required acceleration at the end of the innings was provided well by Duncan Heather (17*) and Ishrak Siddiky (12*).

Our thoughts that we might not have enough in the bank were partly inspired by Valley’s selection of a most dubious ringer, Scott Rodgers, who was down at 8 in the order to play his usual finishing role. But not normally against us… Before then, Ross Mackay on debut took his first 2 wickets for the club as Valley batsmen were dismissed at regular intervals, and Richard Miller in an excellent spell of slow bowling took the required run rate up. Enter Scott at 82-6, with 35 more runs required from 4 overs. He hit an extraordinary 6 off the bowling of Richard A, which hit the pavilion about half-way up and might still be flying if it hadn’t; however, Richard gained his revenge by bowling Scott next ball. Dennis Petrie, admittedly in fast failing light, restricted Valley to 8 off the final over and DUSCC scraped home.

It’s easier to say it when you have won narrowly rather than lost narrowly, but it’s still worth emphasising what a superb game this was, and hopefully one which will inspire the 3 debutants as well as those longer in the tooth to return to DUSCC colours soon.
