Report

After quite a few years of cancellations due to rain, European Junior Championship games taking priority on the pitch (outrageous :)) and player shortages, DUSCC finally got in a game at Arbroath, and it was worth the wait. DUSCC clutched a win from the jaws of defeat by defending a score of 85. A routine loss seemed inevitable when Arbroath, with a few wickets in hand, needed 21 from the final 6 overs, and 6 from the final 2, but tight bowling from Richard Miller and Andy Evans at the death restricted Arbroath to a total of 82. After a few defeats and on the verge of another one, the DUSCC team felt pretty chuffed at the end of the game… until it lined up to shake hands with the opposition team, and realised its average age was, maybe, 14? They have some seriously good young players whose adherence to the cricket text book is something a few of us could learn from… We should also thank Arbroath for supplying a couple of guest players when a couple of ours could not appear at short notice; David Bridges and Fraser Burnett both played important roles with bat and ball respectively.

Having won the toss and batted first, the first half of the DUSCC innings was propped up by Steve Boarder who scored 34 of the first 51 runs. Felix Evans, who guested for us alongside his father Andy, gave solid support – as he did later with the ball and in the field. Another impressive player who will be welcome back any time to the DUSCC fold! Wickets fell at regular intervals and it took a final over from which 12 runs came to get us to a total of 85. 5 of those runs came in penalties when a ball struck the helmet behind the keeper; they were pretty crucial in the end…

In the Arbroath reply there were solid bowling efforts from Blair Smith, Ross Mackay and Felix but wickets were at a premium and it seemed as though Arbroath were managing their chase well for most of the innings. However, at the death Richard and Andy removed pace from the ball and bowled accurately, and runs dried up sufficiently for DUSCC to squeak out the win.
