We’ve been doing giant paintings on the floor at a couple of our art therapy groups recently. We stick big rolls of paper to the floor and let the babies crawls or roll around and use the paints. They really enjoy the freedom it gives them and it’s nice for parents too as they definitely don’t need to worry about where the paint goes. It’s fun to see the marks the little ones make and how they differ depending on how mobile they are – wee ones who are just sitting making rainbows of paint around themselves and those who can crawl covering the space.
This one would be easy to adapt for home as it actually keeps it less messy by being a floor covering and a painting surface in one! You can use rolls of cheap paper or even old wallpaper or lining paper. Stick them down to the floor with masking tape to stop it from moving about while little ones crawl over it and then let them loose. Stick to water based non-toxic paints for safety and easy clean up. You could introduce some sponges for variety when they are tired of using their hands and feet. Or try big household painting brushes. It is fun to do this one with siblings and each have a different colour so you can see how they have moved around each other on the paper.
