Profile

Past Member To and From Dates: April 2017 – October 2018
Past Member Current Position: Postdoc at Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), Melbourne

Michael joined the AC-BI team in April 2017 as Structural Biology / Biophysics scientist.
Michael studied Chemistry at the University of Melbourne, Australia, completing a combined BSc/LLB in 2010, followed in 2011 by a BSc (Honours) year at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) in Melbourne. He then undertook a PhD, also at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute, under the joint supervision of Prof. Guillaume Lessene (Chemical Biology Division), Dr. Peter Czabotar and Prof. Peter Colman (Structural Biology Division), which he completed in November 2016. His project involved the structure-guided design and synthesis of inhibitors of pro-survival Bcl-2 family proteins (BH3-mimetics) towards novel anti-cancer agents. This project utilised a combination of macromolecular X-ray crystallography, synthetic organic chemistry, biophysical (SPR, AlphaScreen) and cell-based assays. He is excited to be a part of the multi-disciplinary AC-BI team developing novel PROTACs. Outside the lab he enjoys swimming, cycling, exploring the outdoors, learning languages and all variety of music and cinema.
