Calum is from Ayr (Scotland) and completed a Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde between 2011-2016, carrying out his Master’s project with Dr Allan Watson. During this time, he undertook an industrial placement year in medicinal chemistry at GSK (Stevenage, UK) and summer research placements with Prof. Eva Hevia (Carnegie Trust scholarship, polar organometallic chemistry), Prof. William Kerr (Royal Society of Chemistry scholarship, total synthesis of natural products) and Dr Allan Watson (transition metal catalysis).
In 2016, Calum moved to the University of St Andrews to pursue a PhD in the lab of Prof. Andrew D. Smith, researching enantioselective isothiourea organocatalysis (applications and mechanistic studies).
In 2020, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellowship to work in the group of Prof. Ryan Gilmour at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) Münster in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. His postdoctoral research primarily focused on the development of new synthetic methodologies in organic photochemistry (selective energy transfer catalysis, photoredox catalysis).
Calum moved to the University of Dundee in September 2022 to take up a postdoctoral research position in biological chemistry in the lab of Prof. Alessio Ciulli at the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation. Outside of the lab, he enjoys playing sports (football, squash, golf), reading, and travelling.
