Profile

Past Member To and From Dates: April – September 2022
Past Member Current Position: Visiting PhD student (University of Córdoba, Spain)

Alejandro, a native of Málaga in southern Spain, received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2017 and completed his Master’s in Translational Biomedical Research in 2018 at the University of Córdoba. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded a competitive grant from the Spanish Science Ministry (FPU Fellowship) to work in Prof. Marco A Calzado lab´s, where he developed a keen interest in the analysis of post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their impact on cell dynamics, with a focus on pharmacological applications. His research encompassed the fields of protein biochemistry, molecular biology, cell signalling, and drug discovery, and involved the characterization of novel substrates of the kinase DYRK2 in the DNA damage response and the cell cycle control. On the other hand, he has helped to elucidate the action mechanism of certain hypoxic-mimetic compounds. Alejandro also spent a short period in the lab of Alessio Ciulli, gaining exposure to the area of TPD. In February 2023, he returned to Ciulli’s lab as a Post-Doctoral molecular biologist to work on innovative strategies to study cell signalling dynamics. In his leisure time, he enjoys hiking, running, socializing with friends, and reading.
