Exams are just around the corner, and we know what that means — longer days, more notes, and probably more caffeine than usual.
To support you during this time, the Main Library will be open 24/7 from Wednesday, 22 April to Tuesday, 19 May 2026. Whether you prefer early mornings, late nights, or something in between, the space is there for you.
That said, 24/7 opening isn’t all positive. It gives you flexibility, but it can also lead to some less helpful habits if you’re not careful. So here’s a more honest look at both sides, along with a few ways to make it work for you.
The good side of 24/7
Study when it suits you
Not everyone works best during the day. Having access around the clock means you can find the time that works for you.
More space, less pressure
With people spread out across the day and night, it’s often easier to find a space that suits how you like to study.
Flexibility to build your own routine
You’re not forced into one way of working — you can figure out what works best and stick to it.
The not-so-great side (and how to deal with it)
1. Staying longer than you planned
It’s easy to lose track of time and keep going, even when you’re no longer being productive.
What helps:
Set a realistic finish time before you start and stick to it. There’s a point where staying longer stops being useful.
2. Pushing sleep aside
Just because the Library is open all night doesn’t mean you should be.
What helps:
Think of sleep as part of your revision. You’ll take in and retain far more if you’re properly rested.
3. Everything starts to feel the same
Same seat, same notes, same surroundings — it can get a bit draining.
What helps:
Change your environment. Move floors, try a different space, or take a proper break away from your desk.
4. Late nights and getting home safely
Travelling late at night isn’t always ideal, especially on your own.
What helps:
If you can, leave with someone else or let someone know when you’re heading off.
A few simple reminders
- Take regular breaks — even short ones make a difference
- Keep hydrated and eat properly
- Don’t underestimate the value of stopping for the day
Take a break when you need it
If you need to step away for a bit:
- CreateSpace (Ground Floor)
A chance to do something hands-on and switch off for a while
- Broughty Ferry Beach Club (Middle Floor)
A quieter space to take a breather
- Café and kitchen areas
Somewhere to grab a drink or something to eat
We’re here to support you
Exam time can feel full-on, but you don’t have to do it all in one go or on your own. The Library is here to give you the space and flexibility to study in a way that works for you.
Use the 24/7 access in a way that helps, not one that wears you out.
Good luck with your exams, and take care of yourself along the way.
