Summer is the perfect time to catch up on reading, get ahead with your studies or make progress on your dissertation. If you’ll be away from Dundee during the vacation, you don’t have to miss out on access to a university library.
The SCONUL Summer Vacation Access Scheme allows eligible undergraduate and taught postgraduate students to use participating university libraries across the UK and Ireland during the host institution’s summer vacation.
Study wherever your summer takes you
Whether you’re visiting family, working elsewhere over the summer or simply fancy a change of study environment, the scheme gives you access to a wide range of higher education libraries, helping you stay productive wherever you are.
Who can use the scheme?
If you’re an undergraduate or taught postgraduate student at a SCONUL member institution, you’ll normally be able to use participating university libraries for reference purposes during their summer vacation.
Before you visit
Before setting off, it’s worth spending a few minutes planning ahead.
You should:
- Check that the library you want to visit is participating in the scheme.
- Look up the library’s summer opening hours and vacation dates.
- Check whether you need to register in advance or bring any additional documentation.
- Take your current University of Dundee student or library card, along with any other proof of enrolment if requested.
Checking in advance can help avoid a wasted journey, as local arrangements may vary between institutions.
What access does the scheme provide?
The Summer Vacation Access Scheme offers reference access, allowing you to:
- Use library study spaces.
- Consult books and journals within the library.
- Make use of library facilities for study and research.
Please note that the scheme does not include borrowing rights or access to electronic resources. If you’re looking for borrowing privileges throughout the year, you may be eligible for the separate SCONUL Access Scheme, which has different eligibility requirements.
A few things to remember
Access is offered at the discretion of each participating library. Occasionally, access may be limited because of refurbishment work, special events, busy study periods or other operational reasons, so it’s always worth checking before you travel.
