Background
Turnitin introduced a new interface over a year ago. At the time, some key functionality was initially missing, and the upgrade was postponed. Over the past year, further enhancements and accessibility improvements have been made.
Decision
Following a review of the updated Turnitin Feedback Studio, the University have decided to proceed with the upgrade from the current “Classic” Turnitin Feedback Studio to the new “Standard” Turnitin Feedback Studio. This is an upgrade to an existing service rather than a replacement system. The upgrade to a new interface provides a range of benefits, including usability and accessibility improvements.
Go-live date
The new interface will be enabled on Monday 3 August 2026. This timing has been chosen to reduce the risk of a mid-semester change and to allow staff to begin preparing 2026/27 assessments in the upgraded environment.
Action required (now)
- If you have already started creating Turnitin assignments within 2026/27 modules, please pause further setup until updated guidance is available.
- If you have Turnitin assignments that have not yet been setup within a 2025/26 module (e.g. SEM3 or resubmissions), please ensure you do this before Monday 3 August 2026.
- Targeted communications with further support will be sent to affected module leaders before the interface upgrade.
Existing assignments
Existing Turnitin assignments (in modules up to and including 2025-26) will continue to operate. Existing guidance for modules up to and including 2025-26 will remain available for staff and students. New guidance will clearly distinguish between pre-upgrade and post-upgrade workflows.
Staff development schedule
A programme of demonstrations, training sessions and drop-in support will run throughout August and semester 1. Colleagues who use Turnitin assignments are encouraged to attend a staff development session and review the updated guidance materials before the change takes effect.
