Guidance and submission instructions for authors

Prior to submission:

There are two types of paper currently being invited for submission:  short, blog-style articles between 500-1000 words including an abstract of 50 words and excluding references; and formal academic papers between 3,000 and 4,000 words in length including an abstract of 200 words and excluding references.

Submissions must have an academic sponsor e.g. an academic member of staff or supervisor. They can also be co-author, listed as second or later author but the student(s) must come first. The sponsor must be copied into the submission email when the article is submitted and resubmitted.

By submitting to the journal, authors confirm that work submitted has not been submitted elsewhere nor is under consideration for publication, or been published, in another journal. They are also confirming that they are the copyright owner of the submitted material and/or that they have sought and gained permission to reuse third-party copyrighted material where necessary.

Blog submission template:

  • Front page – please include the following: author names and affiliations; name and email address of supervisor; title of paper; format type; contact email address
  • Main body – title (in bold); abstract (50 words); keywords (three to five); introduction; main body including subheadings (such as methodology, findings, discussion, limitations; conclusion; acknowledgements
  • References – only papers cited in the main text should be listed only papers cited in the main text should be listed in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author. Please follow Harvard referencing formats.
  • Font – Calibri 11

Article submission template:

  • Front page – please include the following: author names and affiliations; name and email address of supervisor; title of paper; format type; contact email address
  • Main body – title (in bold); abstract (200 words); keywords (three to five); introduction; main body including subheadings (such as methodology, findings, discussion, limitations; conclusion; acknowledgements

To submit, please send a cover message and the paper to the following email address: josssr@dundee.ac.uk. Please include your academic sponsor in the email and put the following in the subject heading: JOSSR – article submission – first author surname

Peer Review Process

All submissions will be reviewed by at least one peer-reviewer who will be contacted before being sent a paper to confirm availability and asked to return the paper, with comments, within 90 days. The final responsibility for decisions of acceptance or rejection of submitted manuscripts lies with the editors.

Open Access and Preservation Statement

Unless otherwise noted, all work accepted for publication in the Journal of Social Science Student Research will be made open access, available under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC-BY 4.0). Published work will be marked as ©The Authors.

With the aim of supporting students and early career researchers at the start of their academic and publishing careers, the Journal of Social Science Student Research does not apply submission charges nor article processing charges (APCs).

The Journal of Social Science Student Research in association with The University of Dundee Library and Learning Centre is committed to the long-term preservation of content published under its name. This commitment extends to preserving copies of content published in the journal in the University of Dundee’s institutional repository, The Discovery Research Portal (known as “Discovery”) and registering it with a persistent Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Notice and Take Down Policy

As an open access journal, we are committed to making our content available online. To avoid the unintentional inclusion of third-party copyrighted material, our submission instructions for authors require that they make every effort to contact rights holders. However, we recognise that sometimes material may be published which we later find is in breach of copyright law.

If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found material the Journal of Social Sciences Student Research for which you have not given permission, please contact JOSSR@dundee.ac.uk with the following information.

  • Your contact details
  • Bibliographic details for the item complained of, including a URL
  • An outline of the nature of the complaint and proof of being the rights holder

On receipt of a complaint the editorial board will:

  • Acknowledge the complaint and make an initial judgement of the validity of the complaint.
  • Withdraw the item temporarily from public view, whilst the complaint is being investigated.
  • If the grounds of the complaint are considered plausible, the material will be permanently withdrawn from the journal, and from Discovery. If possible, the author will be contacted to inform them of the withdrawal, but their permission is not required to action it.
