We’re delighted to be involved in activities to coincide with the National Year of Reading. This campaign is designed to help people discover the joy of reading and make it part of their everyday lives. From national moments to local reading activities, events in schools and libraries across the country, as well as support from a network of ambassadors, major organisations, and an army of volunteers, 2026 will be packed with ways for everyone to get involved, reaching into all corners of society.
The key aims and objectives of the campaign are to
1. Make reading relevant: Reading is ‘re-branded’ as socially meaningful, culturally visible, and personally valuable
2. Engage new audiences: A universal campaign encouraging everyone in the UK to read more frequently, in more ways; with targeted approaches reaching children, young people and families from disadvantaged communities
3. Transform practice and build infrastructure: the National Year of Reading 2026 creates a legacy – changing reading culture in schools, communities and beyond
For the Library Academic and Cultural services our vision is to promote the library as a vibrant, inclusive and trusted hub for reading, creativity and connection, and to raise awareness of our diverse collections which, as well as being used for teaching and research, can bring pleasure and inspiration.
During the year we will share some highlights including material relating to design, artists books, comics, reading that relates to Dundee, tips for studying better and recommendations from our leisure and other collections. There will also be an opportunity to join our community reading sessions relating to sustainability and mental health.
