Background

Keeping active after a stroke is essential for recovery and wellbeing.

Many stroke survivors have told us that their preferred way of keeping active is walking outdoors.  They have also told us that walking with a family member or friend helps them to get out and about more.

We have therefore developed the We Walk programme to help people who have had a stroke to walk more by working with a walking buddy (usually a family member or friend).

We Walk was developed in partnership with people who have had a stroke, their family members and friends, and health and exercise professionals.

We are currently testing the We Walk programme with people who have had a stroke to find out they feel about using it and how it can be improved.
