PREDICTION ADR partners find new gene for ACE inhibitor-induced cough in collaboration with US eMERGE network.

Around 10% of individuals taking ACE inhibitors (ACEI) to control blood pressure will develop a persistent dry cough. This leads to inappropriate antiobiotic use and eventually to discontinuation of the ACEI medication. US investigators in collaboration with PREDICTION ADR have found a common gene variant that identifies individuals more susceptible to such ACEI cough. This gene encodes a component of a potassium channel which is of particular interest as potassium channel blockers are thought to be useful as cough medicines. Read more…
