If you\u2019ve ever used the small study room in the DJCAD Library called Cattrell<\/em>, you might have wondered where the name came from. It looks like any other study space \u2014 six desks, a screen for presentations, and plenty of plug sockets. But the name actually has a pretty inspiring story behind it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room is named after Louise Cattrell<\/strong>, a DJCAD graduate who\u2019s made a big name for herself in the art world. She studied Fine Art here at Dundee, finishing her Diploma and Post Diploma in 1980 before heading to the Royal College of Art in London for her Master\u2019s degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Dundee to the Art World<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Louise has gone on to have an incredible career as a professional painter. Her work focuses on landscapes \u2014 not just how they look, but how we remember<\/em> them and how they change over time. Her paintings have been shown in exhibitions and collections all over the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 1994, she also became one of the first-ever winners of what\u2019s now known as the Jerwood Drawing Prize<\/strong>, one of the UK\u2019s top awards for contemporary drawing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Name a Room After Her?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cattrell Study Room is a way of celebrating Louise\u2019s success and showing current students what\u2019s possible after DJCAD. She\u2019s one of many talented DJCAD graduates \u2014 alongside big names like Turner Prize winner Susan Philipsz<\/strong> and photographer Albert Watson<\/strong> \u2014 who\u2019ve gone on to do amazing things after studying here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naming the space after her also reminds visitors and students that DJCAD produces artists who make a real impact in the creative world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Full-Circle Moment<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Louise\u2019s pieces, Anemones<\/em>, is actually part of the University of Dundee\u2019s art collection<\/strong>, which makes the link between her and the university even stronger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For current students, the Cattrell Room isn\u2019t just a quiet place to work \u2014 it\u2019s a reminder that successful artists once sat in the same building, facing the same deadlines and creative challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
