Peep O&#8217;Day Lane<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestled within Dundee\u2019s cityscape, Peep o\u2019 Day Lane is more than just a quaintly named alley\u2014it\u2019s a portal to the city\u2019s rich historical tapestry. The lane&#8217;s name harks back to the Peep o\u2019 Day Mansion, once the residence of Walter Ogilvy of Clova, who later became the 6th Earl of Airlie. Walter, born in 1733 at Cortachy Castle, was the younger brother of Lord Ogilvy, a notable Jacobite leader who fought at Culloden. The mansion likely earned its name due to its east-facing orientation, capturing the first light of dawn\u2014a poetic &#8220;peep o\u2019 day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"291\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2025\/04\/OIP.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for peep o'day lane dundee\" class=\"wp-image-1819\" style=\"width:447px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Walter Ogilvy&#8217;s death in 1819, the mansion was eventually demolished to make way for the Dundee Gas Works, marking a shift from aristocratic dwellings to industrial development. Despite the physical absence of the mansion, the name Peep o\u2019 Day Lane endures, preserving a fragment of Dundee&#8217;s noble past amidst its modern evolution.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Peep o\u2019 Day Lane stands as a testament to Dundee&#8217;s layered history, where echoes of Jacobite tales and industrial progress converge.
