We want to give you a heads-up about some essential repair work taking place in the Main Library this January.

Our colleagues in Estates and Campus have identified a significant fault with the heating feed to the Main Library. To fix this safely and properly, the heating will need to be switched off for a short period while repairs are carried out.

🛠️ What’s happening?

The Main Library will be without heating for approximately five days while repair work takes place.

📅 When will this happen?

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 12 January 2026, during the week commencing that date.

🤔 Why now?

Unfortunately, this isn’t something that can wait. Delaying the repair could lead to further damage and potentially affect other areas of the University. Carrying out the work as soon as possible helps ensure we can continue to provide a comfortable and safe study environment in the long term.

What does this mean for you?

  • The Main Library will remain open throughout the repair period
  • 📚 All Library services will continue as usual
  • 🌡️ The Library will be cooler than normal, so please dress warmly
  • 🚰 Running hot water will still be available
  • ☕ The 1st and 2nd floor kitchens will remain open for making hot drinks
  • 🧣 Blankets are available from the ground floor to help keep you warm

Why aren’t portable heaters being provided?

While we know this would seem helpful, adding extra electrical heaters would overload the building’s electrical capacity and could cause power outages in the Library.

Alternative study spaces 🏫

If you’d prefer a warmer space during the day, you’re welcome to use other study locations across campus, including:

  • Scrymgeour Building
  • DJCAD Library
  • Global Room

Our thanks 💙

We appreciate your patience and understanding while this important work is carried out. These repairs are essential to protect the building and improve your study environment going forward.

If you have any questions, Library staff will be happy to help—just ask at the desk.

Stay warm, and happy studying!
