Monday 27 October – Sunday 2 November
It’s Green Libraries Week, and we’re celebrating all the ways the University of Dundee Library is doing its bit for the planet! From smart energy use to creative ways of reducing waste, sustainability is at the heart of what we do — every book borrowed and every repair made helps make a difference.
Borrow, Don’t Buy
Libraries have always been green without even trying — by borrowing instead of buying, you’re helping reduce printing, packaging, and shipping waste.
Our short loan collection makes it even easier to share. Instead of buying lots of copies of the same book, students can borrow what they need for a few hours so everyone gets access, with less waste all round.
Go Digital
Prefer to read or watch online? Our massive collection of ebooks, ejournals, and streaming services means you can access what you need instantly — no paper, no postage, and no waiting. It’s better for the planet and for your deadlines!
Repair, Reuse, Create
At CreateSpace, you’ll find sewing machines, embroidery tools, and 3D printers ready to help you fix, upcycle, or design something new.
Got a torn jumper? Mend it. Need a gadget part? Print it. It’s all about reusing what we have and learning new creative skills along the way.
Smart and Energy-Efficient
Our library uses sensor-activated lights, so energy isn’t wasted when spaces are empty. We also have hot and cold water stations that save energy while keeping everyone hydrated. Small changes, big impact.
Recycle and Reduce Waste
We’ve got recycling bins throughout the library for paper, plastics, tins, and even batteries. Proper recycling means less waste going to landfill — and that’s good news for everyone.
Sharing Tech
Need a charging cable, GoPro, or ergonomic keyboard? You can borrow all sorts of tech and assistive hardware from the library instead of buying your own. It saves money, cuts down on electronic waste, and helps make useful kit available to everyone.
Kirkcaldy Campus Library
In celebration of Green Libraries Week, Kirkcaldy Library invite you to come along and pot up a library plant cutting. They have lots to choose from!
Every Little Bit Helps
Libraries have always been about sharing and supporting each other — now we’re doing the same for the planet.
So, this Green Libraries Week, take a moment to see how your everyday library habits help make a difference. Whether you’re borrowing books, using digital resources, or creating something new in CreateSpace, you’re already helping to make the University greener.
Together, we’re proving that small actions can lead to big change.
