Professor Alex Gitterman is <\/span>a<\/span> Professor of Social Work and <\/span>former <\/span>Director of the Doctoral Program at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. <\/span>Previously he wa<\/span>s <\/span>on the <\/span>f<\/span>aculty<\/span> of the Columbia University School of Social work. <\/span>Alex has <\/span>edited <\/span>The<\/span> handbook of social work p<\/span>ractice with<\/span> vulnerable and resilient p<\/span>opulations<\/span>, Third edition,<\/span> (2014) and co-edited<\/span> Mental health and social problems: A social work perspective<\/span> (2010); <\/span>The encyclopedia of social work with groups<\/span> (2009); and <\/span>Mutual aid, vulnerable and resilient populations, and the<\/span> life cycle<\/span>, Third Edition, <\/span>(2005)<\/span>. He has also co-authored <\/span>The Life Model of social work practice: Advances in theory and practice, <\/span>Fourth<\/span> Edition <\/span>(202<\/span>1<\/span>); and<\/span> Public health social work in maternal and child health: A forward <\/span>P<\/span>lan<\/span> (1986). <\/span><\/p>\n

Alex is the Ed<\/span>itor of a series for Columbia University Press <\/span>about <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Helping<\/span> Empower the<\/span>Powerless<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Alex has published articles on social work practice, <\/span>evidenced-guided practice, <\/span>social work with groups, field instruction, supervision, organizational <\/span>behavior,<\/span> and teaching. He also directed a federally funded project on the training of social workers for leadership in the field of maternal and child health from 1980 to 1997. Alex served as the President and on the board of the Association for the Advancement of<\/span> Social Work with Groups, an international professional organization. For the Council on Social work Education, Alex served as a commissioner on the Commission on Education and Curriculum Innovation and as chair for the Group Work Symposia. <\/span>He currently se<\/span>rves on the Planning Committee for the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision He serves<\/span> on the editorial boards of the following journals: <\/span>Clinical Social Work Journal<\/span>, <\/span>Clinical<\/span> Journal of Supervision<\/span>; <\/span>Journal of Human Behavior<\/span> in the Social Environment<\/span>;<\/span> Social Work, <\/span>Social Work with Groups<\/span>; <\/span>Social Work in Health Care<\/span>; <\/span>Reflections: Narratives of Professional Helping, <\/span>and <\/span>Teaching in Social Work<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alex\u2019s awards <\/span>include<\/span> Council on Social Work Education Significan<\/span>t <\/span>Lifetime<\/span>Achie<\/span>vement Award <\/span>and the International Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Group\u2019s <\/span>Lifetime<\/span> Achievement Award. <\/span><\/p>\n
