Image courtesy the artists and BFI.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cooper Gallery is delighted to present an online event focusing on\u00a0<em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em>\u00a0(1977), Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen&#8217;s 1977 landmark of British Avant-Garde and experimental feminist filmmaking. The heart of the event will be a screening of\u00a0<em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em>, bracketed by an artist\u2019s response from filmmaker Margaret Salmon and a live in-conversation between Laura Mulvey and Margaret Salmon with Q&amp;A.\u00a0This event takes place within the online programme\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/cooper-gallery\/exhibitions\/aisforavant-gardezisforzerolauramulveypeterwollen\/\"><strong><em>A is for Avant-Garde, Z is for Zero<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and is part of Cooper Gallery\u2019s ongoing project\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/cooper-gallery\/exhibitions\/aspaceinbetween\/\">A space in-between<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tickets<\/strong><br \/>\nTickets can be ordered via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/watch.eventive.org\/coopergallery\/play\/5ebd04387454dc003d2f2a88?fbclid=IwAR0CZeYpEGXSZBTetx7esRfg4aGrTw_UC96tHLAV3k5KGhVQFR4hho1SOCA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eventive<\/a>. The ticket price is \u00a32 and covers the cost of the live stream.<br \/>\n<span class=\"s1\">For those attending the screening event who can, please consider donating to the\u00a0equivalent cost of a theatrical ticket to support\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dundeewomensaid.co.uk\/supportus.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dundee Women\u2019s Aid<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule<br \/>\n4\u20136pm<br \/>\n<\/strong>Artist\u2019s response by Margaret Salmon<br \/>\nScreening\u00a0<em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>6\u20137pm<br \/>\n<\/strong>Laura Mulvey &amp; Margaret Salmon in-conversation + Q&amp;A<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\nAbout the film<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen&#8217;s second collaborative film,\u00a0<strong><em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em><\/strong>, addresses the position of women in patriarchy through the prism of psychoanalysis.\u00a0The film draws on the critical writings and investigations by both filmmakers into the codes of narrative cinema, and offers an alternative formal structure through which to consider the images and meanings of female representation in film. Courtesy British Film Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker Biographies<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Laura Mulvey<\/strong>\u00a0(born 1941 in Oxford) is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. She was Director of Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) from 2012 to 2015. She is the author of\u00a0<em>Visual and Other Pleasures<\/em>\u00a0(1989);\u00a0<em>Citizen Kane<\/em>\u00a0(1992);\u00a0<em>Fetishism and Curiosity<\/em>\u00a0(1996);\u00a0<em>Death 24x a Second: Stillness and the Moving Image<\/em>\u00a0(2006); and\u00a0<em>Afterimages: On Cinema, Women and Changing Times\u00a0<\/em>(2019). She has co-edited\u00a0<em>British Experimental Television<\/em>\u00a0(2007);\u00a0<em>Feminisms<\/em>\u00a0(2015); and\u00a0<em>Other Cinemas: Politics, Culture and British Experimental Film in the 1970s<\/em>\u00a0(2017). Mulvey made six films in collaboration with Peter Wollen, including\u00a0<em>Riddles of the Sphinx<\/em>\u00a0(1977), and two films with artist and filmmaker Mark Lewis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Margaret Salmon<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1975, New York)\u00a0lives and works in Glasgow.\u00a0Concerned with a shifting constellation of relations, such as those between camera and subject, human and animal, or autobiography and ethnography,\u00a0Margaret Salmon\u2019s films often examine the gendered, emotive dynamics of social interactions and representational forms. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at institutions including DCA (2018\/19), Tramway (2018) Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (2015); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA (2011); Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2007); Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2007) and Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2006). Her work has been featured in film festivals and major international survey exhibitions, including the Berlin Biennale (2010) and Venice Biennale (2007) London Film Festival (2018, 2016, 2014). Salmon won the inaugural MaxMara Art Prize for Women in 2006, was shortlisted for the Jarman Award 2018 and the 2019 Margaret Tait Award.\u00a0A new 35mm film and photographic works will be featured in GI 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><strong>Access<\/strong><br \/>\nTo access the screening participants are not required to download any software.
