In this blog she tells us about the artist and his comics which he has gifted to the University.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arthur Ranson is a British comic book artist who has worked with popular comic book production companies such as DC Comics and on series such as 2000AD\u2019s <em>Judge Dredd<\/em>. With his unique style of narrative storytelling through sequential art, Ranson has worked with several well-known comic book writers and artists such as Alan Grant and John Wagner to name a few. Many of the collaborative works are available for public viewing upon request at the University of Dundee Archives. Among these is a title called <em>Batman Phantom Stranger<\/em> which Grant wrote and Ranson illustrated. Several <em>2000AD <\/em>programs which Ranson drew are also a part of the collection. For the purpose of easy access, the collections have been divided into four categories according to Ranson\u2019s online list: Collected Editions, Comics History, Graphic Novels, and Comics.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Ranson collection there are many well-known and familiar titles that might be of interest to curious searchers: several <em>2000AD <\/em>and <em>Judge Dredd Megazine<\/em> programs, <em>Captain Britain<\/em> #25,<em> Dandy<\/em> #106, a few foreign publications such as <em>Le Journal de Mickey<\/em> (French) and <em>Eppo Wordt Vervogd<\/em> issues (Dutch), a few <em>Escape Magazine<\/em> issues, a large collection of <em>Phantom Stranger <\/em>issues and <em>Flash Gordon<\/em> reprints; several newsletters and comic book convention information booklets such as that of The UK Comic Art Convention of 1988, several Marvel and DC publications which include issues of <em>Daredevil, Conan the Barbarian, Detective Comics, Doctor Strange,<\/em> etc. Other titles of interest would be <em>House of Hammer<\/em> #14 which contains the comic adaptation of the movie <em>One Million Years B.C.<\/em> that featured late actress Raquel Welch, <em>Astrix the Gaul<\/em> by Goscinnini &amp; Oderzng, and 1985\u2019s <em>Enid Blyton Adventure Magazine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3960 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-1-e1686919286992.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-1-e1686919286992.jpg 597w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-1-e1686919286992-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3959 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-2-e1686919323177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-2-e1686919323177.jpg 598w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/culture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/263\/2023\/06\/Ranson-2-e1686919323177-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Issues of <em>Captain Britain, Phantom Stranger<\/em> and others. There are but a few from the large collection.<\/p>\n<p>The Collected Editions consist of a wide array of titles: the possibly unique January \u2013 June 1928 issue of <em>Kinema Comic<\/em> which has been carefully bound due to its fragile condition, <em>Building Stories<\/em> by Chris Ware, original publications of titles such as the Japanese manga <em>Akira<\/em> and Will Eisner\u2019s <em>Spirit<\/em>, two Japanese manga annuals, translations of all four <em>Mai the Psychic Girl<\/em> books by Titan Books, and several <em>Button Man<\/em> titles co-illustrated by Ranson among many others. There are also books that contain the art of well-known comic book artists such as <em>The Art of Neal Adams Vol. 1, Krazy Kat \u2013 The Comic Art of George Harriman, The Art of Jack Kirby, The Art of Will Eisner, and The Comic Art of Roy Wilson<\/em> among others. A few of the books are also signed such as <em>Dan Dare the Man from Nowhere Volume One<\/em> which is signed by Frank Hampson.<\/p>\n<p>Other titles in the above list include DC Thompson\u2019s 1990 <em>Oor Wullie<\/em>, <em>Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend <\/em>and <em>Little Nemo in the Palace of Ice and Further Adventures <\/em>by Winsor McCay, <em>Alley Oop\u2019s<\/em> B\/W reprints from the 30\u2019s, <em>The Complete E.C. If you are a student who is studying comics or simply someone who wants to browse through the collections, then you are likely to find what you are looking for in Arthur Ranson\u2019s comics collections.
