One of the University\u2019s hidden gems is the D\u2019Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, a treasure trove of natural history specimens from around the world, many of them collected by our first Professor of Biology, D\u2019Arcy Wentworth Thompson, an extraordinary polymath best known for his pioneering work in biomathematics and his enduring influence in art, architecture and many other fields.<\/p>\n

\u00a0D’Arcy Thompson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

D\u2019Arcy built up his collection in the 1880s and 1890s, though sadly his original museum was demolished in the 1950s to make way for the Tower Building. The current version of the museum is in the Carnelley Building, the first building to be purpose-built for University College Dundee when it first opened in 1883.<\/p>\n

Since lockdown, the museum has been open by appointment only. However, we are having a special opening of the museum for students as part of Welcome Week on Tuesday 21 September 6-7.20pm.
