These wonderful beach huts, handcrafted by Suzanne Scott for the River Deep Mountain High exhibition, were inspired by glass plate negatives from the University Archives showing people enjoying the beaches of Carnoustie and Broughty Ferry in 1913.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Sunny Dundee! by Suzanne Scott
\n<\/strong>Installation<\/em><\/p>\n

“I was immediately curious about these quirky wooden wheeled beach huts on these beautiful glass plates, which date back to the summer of 1913. It transpired that they were bathing boxes. It was required then that you should be covered from neck to knee with a bathing costume. These boxes allowed you to be discreet whilst changing for bathing in the sea. Times have changed dramatically since then, I wanted to play with that contrast and the theme of Sunny Dundee. This diorama welcomes you to Dundee as a sunny beach destination, with a nod to the news that there are plans for a new city beach on the waterfront.”<\/p>\n

Suzanne Scott is an artist and illustrator based in Dundee working under the name WhimSicAL LusH. She creates unique, quirky illustrations that feature on ranges of prints, stationery, homeware, accessories and more. Working with businesses both large and small she helps them tell their stories too \u2013 via illustration.<\/p>\n

River Deep Mountain High was an exhibition in the University’s Lamb Gallery to mark the Year of Coast and Water curated by Archive Services. Artists, designers and creative writers were invited to respond to the University’s rich archive, museum and rare book collections on the themes of rivers, seas, coasts and mountains. Original photographs, journals, plans, models and specimens relating to whaling, the River Tay, the natural world and mountaineering inspired jewellery, artwork, sculpture, poetry and much more.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
