The poem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s text addresse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0absence and presence in the archive, and in relation to Dundee\u2019s past industrial history. Etching as a process manifests some of those characteristics: scratching a metal plate with a sharp instrument, leaving a trace, and then inking those marks to print. Metal gestures toward Victorian engineering; the plate\u2019s decorative style harks back to Victorian advertising. Metal also suggests permanence: yet the 1879\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tay<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Bridge disaster indicates that those are illusions: \u2018old brick stumps\u2019 are all that remain. Images from the archive show the monumentality of Dundee\u2019s whaling enterprise: \u2018a floating factory\u2019 at sea. Whales are, of course, also monumental in size. The last stanza of Gail\u2019s poem is above. Artists, designers and creative writers were invited to respond to the University\u2019s rich archive, museum and rare book collections on the themes of rivers, seas, coasts and mountains.
