class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p><strong>What I am Reading Now\u2026<\/strong><b><br \/><strong>Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa<\/strong><\/b><br \/>April 2021<br \/><br \/><\/p><\/div><div><p>I am enormously privileged to be collaborating right now with a group of extraordinary young black women based in Norway who have recently begun making creative projects together under the name \u2018Oi!\u2019 I first met them two years ago in the course of researching what became my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/2019.bergenassembly.no\/contributors\/the-creators-of-oi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>curatorial contributions<\/b><\/a>\u00a0to the 2019 Bergen Assembly triennial exhibition. Since then, Oi! has taken on a life of its own: the group has participated in a further\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/antikrigfest.org\/festivalprogram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>two exhibitions<\/b><\/a>, presented their work a two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/445338238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>high-profile conferences<\/b><\/a>, founded an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentbergen.com\/student-organisations\/the-african-student-society\/?fbclid=IwAR1KOg4ZQhsEMiHAb7AS-Xt6DL0K0Mjtff5TGJRn_FvNpwR0GvLlZT1kWYg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>African Students\u2019 Association<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuma.no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>creative writing project<\/b><\/a>, begun work on a \u201csurvivor\u2019s guide to Norway\u201d for young people of colour that will hopefully be published later this year, and also started developing a new project at the invitation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kunsthalltrondheim.no\/en\/formidling\/oi-trondheim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Kunsthall Trondheim<\/b><\/a>. And all this in what little time they have away from work, study, volunteering and family. Their energy and dedication is positively humbling.<\/p><\/div><div><p>At this point in our collaboration, I see it as my task, as George Shire once put it, \u201cto help them make sense of their everyday, and to support them in developing the tools they would need to transform it \u2013 should they so choose.\u201d For that reason, I have been thinking a lot about the popular education movements that emerged in the mid\/late twentieth century, particularly those that originated in the context of grassroots political struggles in the Global South. And I have been of course especially interested in the roles that creative practices have played in those struggles.<\/p><\/div><div><p>My current reading is a reflection of this \u2013 that is, a desire to discover how best to deploy creative practices in the service of the revolution we so desperately need. In no particular order:<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013 Participatory action research (PAR) is an epistemological framework that originates in the critiques of knowledge production levelled by popular education, anti-sexist and anti-racist struggles since the mid-20th century. PAR challenges exclusionary academic notions of what counts as knowledge, and legitimizes and prioritizes expertise and perspectives that derive from lived experience, particularly the lived experiences of those that have been historically marginalized.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Fals-Borda and Rahman\u2019s<\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>1991 book<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Action and Knowledge<\/i><\/b>describes early and important experiments with PAR in Bangladesh, Columbia, India, Nicaragua, Peru, Sri Lanka, the United States, and Zimbabwe that were conducted by academics in the late 1970s and early 1980s who left positions within the university to engage in participatory community research.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013 In the widely known essays collected in<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Teaching to Transgress: Education as a Practice of Freedom<\/i><\/b>(1994), professor, feminist and social activist<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b>bell hooks<\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>draws on the theories and practices of feminism to imagine what a genuinely emancipatory education might be.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013 Writing in the early 1970s, Austrian Catholic priest, theologian, philosopher and theorist\u00a0<b>Ivan Illich<\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was highly critical of the increasing dominance of technocratic elites and the institutionalisation of specialised knowledge in industrial societies, which he saw as robbing peasant societies of their vital skills and know-how. In<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Tools for Conviviality<\/i><\/b>, he argues for the need to develop new tools for democratising access to practical knowledge so as to protect and strengthen workers\u2019s autonomy.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013 Visual Arts Network South Africa (VANSA) have produced a number of excellent handbooks that address various key aspects of cultural production. Described in the introduction as \u2018not a toolkit but an offering\u2019, the 2019 book<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Organising<\/i><\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>collates the experiences and strategies of a group of \u2018arts organisers\u2019 who are involved collectives and collaborations across Southern Africa.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>Toolkit for Cooperative, Collective, &amp; Collaborative Cultural Work<\/i><\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is a record and a distillation of two evenings of dinner and conversation conducted in 2019 by Baltimore-based cultural organisers, artists, musicians, and community-oriented practitioners who have largely worked through cooperative, collective, and collaborative models in the United States. It documents their thoughts on the value of collectivity and community, their reasons for working through collective models, the challenges they face, and their strategies for overcoming them.<\/p><\/div><div><p>\u2013 The Combahee River Collective was a radical Black feminist organization formed in 1974 and named after Harriet Tubman\u2019s 1853 raid on the Combahee River in South Carolina that freed 750 enslaved people. The Collective\u2019s analysis of the roots of Black women\u2019s oppression under capitalism was highly sophisticated, and their arguments for the reorganization of society based on the collective needs of the most oppressed were a far from a mere academic exercise.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i>How We Get Free<\/i><\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>reprints the famous Combahee River Collective Statement of 1977 alongside essays and interviews with the collectives\u2019 founder members.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-86718c5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"86718c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9265f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9265f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p><b>Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa<\/b><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is a researcher, artist and educator.
