Having gone to the USA to work as&nbsp;maids, they landed in the house of the Director of the Harvard Observatory, who soon&nbsp;realised&nbsp;they were too intelligent to be just&nbsp;maids&nbsp;and&nbsp;employed them as part of their <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvard_Computers\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvard_Computers\">\u201cwomen computers\u201d<\/a> <\/em>team to&nbsp;analyse&nbsp;large amounts&nbsp;of data on variable stars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We follow this example with the<strong> \u201cWilliamina and Joanna School for Variable Stars\u201d<\/strong>.&nbsp;Using data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/stellar-nursery.ac.uk\/research\/the-north-phase-legacy-survey\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/stellar-nursery.ac.uk\/research\/the-north-phase-legacy-survey\/\">North-PHASE Legacy Survey<\/a>,&nbsp;acquired&nbsp;by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oajweb.cefca.es\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/oajweb.cefca.es\/\">Javalambre&nbsp;Observatory<\/a> in Spain, we want to give an opportunity to youths&nbsp;from around the area to come to the University and learn about how stars form and evolve while contributing to real science, discovering and studying new variable stars in young stellar clusters and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is&nbsp;designed as a long-term, out-of-school activity, where pupils will come to the University of Dundee roughly once a month for January\/June and September\/December.&nbsp;In addition to this, we will run two science fairs at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leisureandculturedundee.com\/culture\/mills\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.leisureandculturedundee.com\/culture\/mills\">Mills Observatory<\/a> towards the end of each session (June 2026, December 2026) where the pupils will be able to show their&nbsp;families&nbsp;and friends what they have been working on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our project is funded by a STFC\/UKRI SPARK Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_-1024x263.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-529\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3.8937395504365595;width:311px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_-1024x263.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_-300x77.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_-768x197.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_-624x160.png 624w, https:\/\/sites.dundee.ac.uk\/asiciliaaguilar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/Science_and_Technology_Facilities_Council_logo.svg_.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first cohort of pupil citizen scientists is starting in January 2026 and we are fully booked, but please contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/people\/aurora-sicilia-aguilar\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/people\/aurora-sicilia-aguilar\">Aurora Sicilia-Aguilar<\/a> if you are interested in joining for future sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay posted for updates and more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, you don&#8217;t know what you can do until you get a chance to try&#8230;
