Il video-tape mezzo dell’arte figurativa

Si è tenuto alla Poolierie di Gaz, nei primi giorni di ottobre, un meeting sul video-tape, un incontro tra il mezzo televisivo e l’arte figurativa. Il video-tape come mezzo, appunto, dell’arte figurativa è stato impiegato per la prima volta nel 1969 da Gerry Schum, il quale riprese azioni di artisti della Land Art. La necessità di impossessarsi del mezzo televisivo per creare un tipo politico alternativo di immagine è stata compresa dal coreano Nam June Paik, esponente del gruppo Fluxus, che ha realizzato molte performance con Charlotte Moorman. Gli americani, in genere, amano ripiegare su un uso, più che politico, ironico del video-tape. Così Douglas Davis, Peter Campus e Dan Graham. Una analisi della specificità del mezzo, nei suoi rapporti spazio-temporali, è stata tentata dallo svizzero Jean Otth. L’italiano Giulio Paolini ha sintetizzato in un nastro di un minuto tutta la sua attività di quindici anni. Il video tape si presta bene a un uso politico del linguaggio artistico.

Videotape as a medium of figurative art.

At the Poolierie of Gaz, a conference on videotape took place at the beginning of October 1976, an encounter between the medium of television and figurative art. Videotape as a medium, precisely of figurative art, was used for the first time in 1969 by Gerry Schum, who recorded the actions of Land Art artists. The need to master the television medium, to create a kind of alternative political image, was understood by the Korean Nam June Paik, an exponent of the group Fluxus, who created several performances with Charlotte Moorman. Americans usually like to fall back on an ironic, rather than political, use of videotape, including Douglas Davis, Peter Campus and Dan Graham. An analysis of the specificity of the medium, of its space-time relations, was attempted by the Swiss Jean Otth. The Italian Giulio Paolini summarized, in a one-minute videotape, all his activity for fifteen years. Videotape lends itself well to a political use of artistic language.
