Report

DUSCC donned its thermals and wellies for this the first game of the 2008 season, a friendly against a DU Students 2nd XI at a cold and damp but surprisingly calm Riverside. In a match played in good spirit, DUSCC, having been asked to bat first, lost wickets at regular interals on an unsurprisingly sluggish pitch, succumbing to 54-8 at one point. The Students, to their great credit, rotated their bowlers, using 10 in total, and saw a last-wicket partnership of 36 between Scott Rodgers (21*) and Richard Proctor (9*) help DUSCC raise its 20-over total to 90.

The DU Students chase ran along similar lines, with run-scoring on an early season pitch proving very difficult, especially when pace was removed from the ball. In the field, the DUSCC effort became the Proctor and Miller Show as each took wickets and superb catches. The last Students wicket fell at 77 in the 18th over, giving DUSCC a narrow and exciting win by 13 runs.

Dennis Petrie and Saurabh Dayal made their debuts for DUSCC in this game and both showed that they will be real assets to the team, if they are willing to brave the cold and damp for the DUSCC cause in the future…
