Report

Despite horrendous weather on the day before, and rain on the day which incredibly timed itself to fall in the tea interval and immediately after the end of the game, DUSCC had a thoroughly enjoyable day in its inaugural fixture with Crathie in the grounds of Balmoral Castle. This was our first weekend fixture, and our first stab at a longer form of the game, for some years but we hope this will become an annual event; it was a perfect opportunity to play at an attractive ground and give every player a go at something, which is what DUSCC exists for.

The pitch was predictably very slow and very low after the recent rain, and after losing the toss and batting first DUSCC made steady if unspectacular early progress. At the half-way mark we had made 56-3, Colin Reid (15) and Varun Gopalakrishnan (29) building a platform and ensuring we had some wickets in hand for the later overs. A 6th wicket partnership of 49 in 6 overs between Dennis Petrie (an excellent 41) and Steve Boarder (26) provided some acceleration, and Miles Dixon (12 not out) and Scott Rodgers (31 not out) finished the innings perfectly with 48 runs in the last 4 overs. Scott took advantage of the short boundaries, hitting three 6s in a knock of impressive violence.

191 felt like a few over par and there were early wickets in the Crathie reply. Alan MacDonald bowled one of the balls of the season, swinging one out and seaming it back in to hit the stumps (so I’m informed… reliably, honest) and Mark Stephenson took one of the catches of the season, a one-handed effort plucked from above his head. Everyone pitched in as Crathie were dismissed for 97 in the 37th over and there was time just before the rain came to give Rory, the son of one of the Crathie players, a few balls in the middle. One for the future.

An excellent day. Even the scenery on the drive there and back was spectacular.
