Report

DUSCC’s latest game with Almond Valley owed much to the willingness of Valley to lend us a couple of players to make up our numbers. We owe them thanks for this – especially as they contributed to a narrow DUSCC win by 9 runs… on a slightly damp wicket DUSCC were asked to bat first and lost early wickets, stumbling to 12-3. Colin Reid was the backbone of the innings, opening and ending undefeated on an excellent 40, and his partnerships with Steve Boarder, Scott Rodgers and Joe (on debut) saw us through to a competitive if not insurmountable 113-7 after our 20 overs.

Valley’s reply started promisingly but fell away due to some pretty bizarre run-outs dismissing 3 of the top 4 batsmen. Scott’s helpful calling of the runs from behind the stumps may or may not have contributed to one of them… Varun Gopalakrishnan and Joe (having a fine all-round game) both bowled very well, ending with identical figures of 3-0-9-1, but at 81-5 after 15 overs the game was anyone’s. At this point however Steve Marshall (one of our Valley guests) and Alan Bell were in the middle of genuinely good spells which restricted the scoring rate… with the aid of one slightly generous leg-before decision. Richard Miller and Colin then bowled the final 3 overs tightly enough to restrict Valley to 104-8.

This was another really enjoyable game, with the result open until the last few balls – thanks again to the Valley.
